Turkish president Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday that protests regarding the prison of the mayor of Istanbul became a “movement of violence” and that the important opposition party could be held chargeable for injured law enforcement officials and property damage.
The detention on the last Wednesday of the mayor of the Imamoglu, the important political rival of Erdogan, caused the best street protests in Turkey for over a decade. On Sunday, the court imprisoned him, waiting for the trial, on charges of corruption, which he denies.

Earlier, interior minister Ali Yerlikaya accused some protesters of “terrorization” of streets and threatening national security. He said that 1133 people were detained during five days of protests and that 123 policemen were injured.
The CHP delegation met the Governor of Istanbul to debate the police repression of the protesters. The head of the party in Istanbul Ozgur Celik said that the police intervention on Sunday evening was the most violent thus far, and plenty of people were hospitalized.
