The United States will not be actively reviewing the terrorist designation of a Syrian Islamist group
The U.S. State Department said it will not be actively reviewing the “foreign terrorist organization” designation of the fundamental Syrian rebel group that overthrew the federal government of President Bashar al-Assad this weekend.
However, it said such appointments are continually under review and, even in the event that they are in place, it doesn’t prohibit U.S. officials from talking to the group’s members or leaders.
“There is no specific assessment of what happened” over the weekend, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters.
“That said, we are always reviewing. There may be a change in our stance on sanctions based on their actions, but today we have nothing.”
He said a review could begin if HTS takes steps to reverse the explanations for its designation. It can be based solely on their actions, he said.
