Monday Briefing – The New York Times

Date:

President Vladimir Putin yesterday prolonged his rule in Russia until 2030, using largely staged elections with no real opposition to realize overwhelming popular support for his domestic dominance and invasion of Ukraine.

Western governments condemned the elections, and a few Russians tried to show the vote right into a protest by lining up at polling stations at noon. Ukraine desired to make its voice heard by firing a volley of exploding drones at Moscow and other targets.

However, the Kremlin rejected these challenges and published results showing that Putin won 87 percent of the vote, even greater than within the 4 previous elections during which he ran.

At a news conference after the vote, Putin commented for the primary time on the death of imprisoned opposition leader Alexei Navalny, calling it an “unfortunate event.” (Navalny’s widow, Yulia Navalnaya, waited in line for hours to vote in Berlin.)

It is difficult to gauge the degree of true public support for Putin because opposition candidates have been barred from running – the three remaining candidates on the ballot didn’t criticize Putin – and the work of independent poll observers has been reduced to its lowest level for the reason that days of the Soviet Union.

Putin intends to make use of his recent six-year term to further consolidate his control over Russian politics and proceed the war in Ukraine. If he completes this term, he’ll develop into the longest-serving Russian leader since Catherine the Great within the 18th century.

“It’s something that Israel, Israeli society, does on its own,” Netanyahu said in an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “We are not a banana republic.”

The remarks by Schumer, the Senate majority leader, were a part of a scathing speech he delivered last week, during which the New York Democrat also accused Netanyahu of putting his political survival ahead of the well-being of his country. The speech indicated a growing rift between Israel and the US over the Gaza war. President Biden praised the speech but stopped in need of endorsing Schumer’s call for a brand new election.

In remarks to his government, Netanyahu promised that the Israeli military would invade Rafah, where greater than 1,000,000 Gazans have taken refuge. The people resettled there are terrified by the prospect of a land invasion.

Humanitarian crisis: Experts say recent ways of delivering aid to Gaza have failed to scale back hunger and malnutrition there.

Following the riot on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, officials and social media corporations worked to stop the lies that spurred the attack. Donald Trump and his allies have made a concerted effort to dam what they call dangerous censorship by conservatives, with financial support from conservative donors who supported groups promoting lies in regards to the 2020 vote.

These efforts, little noticed by most Americans, have weakened control over online misinformation, potentially strengthening Trump’s efforts to regain the presidency.

US elections: Trump again described immigrants as “poisoning” America. President Biden’s re-election campaign said it raised $53 million in February, which is anticipated to extend Democrats’ money advantage over Republicans.

Designer Phoebe Philo, who transformed French fashion brands Chloé and Celine, has been called the Chanel of her generation. However, Philo left the industry almost seven years ago, becoming a myth practically overnight.

In her first interview in ten years, Philo talked to Vanessa Friedman, our chief fashion critic, about reversing the standard trajectory of a designer by starting her own brand after working for mainstream brands.

Live Live: Steve Harley was a British rock star who topped the British charts along with his single “Make Me Smile”. He died on the age of 73.

From Bavaria to Gladbach: How Saarbrücken became cup haunted house.

Equals for now: Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are there the long run of tennis.

The 1927 silent comedy “The Callahans and the Murphys” depicted stereotypes of Irish Americans so harmful that they were withdrawn from circulation and at the moment are considered lost. That didn’t stop my colleague Dan Barry, who learned in regards to the film during an impulsive seek for actress Marie Dressler, from eventually coming across a brief clip of the film that one critic and historian described as “legendary.”

“There were actually only a few videos that, instead of simply being edited, were completely removed because they were deemed offensive,” the historian said.

You can watch this clip, which Barry present in an enormous storage room on the Library of Congress and one other within the collections of the Irish Film Institute, in his article.

That’s it for today’s briefing. Thank you for spending a part of the morning with us. See you tomorrow. —Dan
