The first sea shipment of aid to Gaza in nearly twenty years was fully disembarked on Saturday at a makeshift pier in the Mediterranean Sea, marking a milestone in an endeavor that Western officials hope will alleviate deepening food deprivation in the enclave.
The Open Arms vessel was towing a barge from Cyprus loaded with roughly 200 tonnes of rice, flour, lentils and canned tuna, beef and chicken, supplied by the World Central Kitchen charity.
José Andrés, the Spanish-American chef who founded World Central Kitchen, said his team would begin shipping food by truck, including to northern Gaza, an area gripped by lawlessness and severely damaged by Israeli airstrikes.
However, the distribution was to happen in the shadow of a series of attacks that killed or injured Palestinians looking for desperately needed food. Last month, United Nations aid groups needed to largely suspend deliveries in the northern Gaza Strip, and the United Nations Human Rights Office documented greater than two dozen such attacks.
