Passengers on board Enough air Flight DD176 experienced true terror on December 30, according to the Post, when their plane tried – and failed – to take off not once, but twice at Bangkok’s Don Mueang International Airport. The tragedy occurred just a day after the destruction Jeju Air disaster covering the identical model, a Boeing 737-800which left 179 people dead in South Korea, adding to the chilling drama.
Narongsak Toyabut, a passenger who filmed the shocking moments, described the chaos. “The first attempt raised concerns when the engines stalled,” he said. But the second attempt brought complete panic. “The engine sounded wrong. The plane passed the usual take-off point but did not take off. At the second hangar it suddenly slowed down. That’s when we knew something was very wrong.”
As the passengers clung to their seats in fear, the captain announced: engine failure and taxied back to the terminal. Toyabut, still visibly shaken, said: “It’s hard to explain the phobia. I’m grateful the captain didn’t push the flight. I am unable to imagine what would occur in the air.”
Nok Air tried to control the fallout, issuing a statement: “Passenger safety is our priority. The plane passed inspection and a replacement plane was provided, delaying the flight until 7:20 p.m. We apologize for the inconvenience.”
The timing of this event could not have been more terrifying. Just a day earlier, Jeju Air flight 7C2216 from Bangkok to Muan, South Korea, burst into flames after hitting an embankment during an emergency landing. Investigators are determining why the landing gear failed to deploy and what prompted the pilot to make a second landing attempt after reporting a bird strike.
For passengers aboard DD176, the news was like a clash with fate. A disturbing coincidence of back-to-back incidents involving a Boeing 737-800 has travelers questioning the skies and the safeguards that are supposed to protect them.
