- Hyundai Ioniq 5 N sound is a ‘great start’, but GV60 Magma could outdo it
- Performance hybrids are likely within the works
- The next step within the Magma treatment may very well be the G70 sedan
Can enthusiasts expect a good more pressing reference to the upcoming Genesis GV60 Magma Performance EV, the luxurious brand’s first model from its enthusiast-focused sub-brand, than with the Ioniq 5 N?
Ash Corson, who heads Genesis product planning for North America, stressed to Motor Authority and several other representatives last week during a small roundtable on the Los Angeles auto show that driving the GV60 Magma in a way that ensures it will not play the second stage in relation to the already praised Ioniq 5 N.
Time will tell how exactly Hyundai and Genesis maneuver around one another, but the hot button is that these corporate cousins aren’t tiptoeing around one another.
“It starts with styling – the wide-body look – but it’s also about the five-dimensional look,” Corson said when asked how the GV60 Magma can stand out and elevate the experience in comparison with its 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N cousin. “Listening to audio specifically is a fantastic start with the Ioniq 5 N, but I believe there are a number of places you may do it higher, primal, deep and three-dimensional“
Genesis has already announced a “fascinating and immersive human-machine interface” for the GV60 Magma. But that doesn’t suggest it’s more flashy, the director warned. The brand will strive for tactile feedback and ease of use, but will not accommodate every little thing that technology can allow, reminiscent of gigantic screen sizes. “Some customers think it’s a bit Las Vegas,” he said.

He explained that the Magma models will not compromise on precision, but ride comfort will also remain a priority, comparing the goal tuning experience to an iron fist in a velvet glove. “Sophisticated shock absorbers are definitely the starting point,” Corson explained. “Ensuring a comfortable ride is essential and in the case of Magma we don’t want to compromise too much.”
The driving modes will enable the brand to “really increase responsiveness and tension” when the driving force desires, Corson said.
The current GV60 Performance delivers as much as 483 HP in 10-second Boost mode, while the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N achieves as much as 641 HP in 10-second N Grin Boost mode. Corson didn’t confirm whether the GV60 Magma will beat those numbers, but Genesis has already highlighted improvements to the chassis, cooling and power output and suggested the numbers aren’t the most important challenge.
“With BEVs, it’s very easy to create a high-performance vehicle, right? The acceleration and power you can get with all that torque; I think the bigger challenge is to make the film engaging and emotional.”
That’s considered one of the exciting things my team is working on – to make certain that through R&D and globally, we’re actually interacting with those five senses, like sound and touch,” he explained.
Genesis GV60 Magma concept
Magma GV60 will enter production in 2025and has already demonstrated its dynamic performances on the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed this summer.
Genesis hasn’t fully clarified what’s coming next, and it could have been subject to some changes because the brand repositioned itself to incorporate hybrid vehicles. Not all Magma models will be fully electric, but electrification of the Corson could also be essential, at the very least for the United States. (*5*)
Corson suggested that the following Magma-treated example may very well be the G80’s little brother. “Magma buyers should be younger and affluent,” Corson said, noting that the Genesis G70 is “an obvious space for Magma. It is the brand’s third best-selling model overall and is the model with the youngest demographic (average age 41) and the very best percentage of enthusiastic shoppers.
Genesis of the G70 2024
There’s no word on whether the G70 will really be next or if it’ll be put within the pocket after glimpses of the concept have already been shown. The brand actually showed the G80 Magma concept alongside the GV60 Magma concept within the brand’s early days – which was set to enter production because the G80 Magma Special for the Middle East – and has since shown the X Gran Berlinetta Concept hybrid supercar and the Neolun full-size SUV concept.
Electric or not, the one thing we can’t see with the Magma is a reputation or badge applied to broader swaths of the Genesis model line, Corson stressed, loosely responding to a mention of some German automakers’ brand dilution and overuse of performance badges. “We have a car specialist at the executive chairman level who understands performance and appreciates precision and performance, so I think we all recognize the risk of going too far.”
