Former Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman has died, his family said in a press release Wednesday. He was 82 years old.
Lieberman died Wednesday afternoon in New York together with his wife Hadassah and family members by his side his family said in a press release that he suffered complications from a fall.
“Senator Lieberman’s love for God, his family and America continued throughout his life of service to the public interest,” his family said.
Lieberman’s death was mourned by lawmakers in his state, including Democratic Gov. Ned LaMont, who statement Wednesday cited “political differences” with Lieberman but described the late senator as “a man of integrity and conviction.”
Sen. Chris Murphy, R-Conn., said the state was “shocked” by Lieberman’s sudden death.

Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut also expressed his condolences in: statement on Wednesday, calling Lieberman a longtime friend for greater than 50 years, “a man with a deep conscience [and] conviction, [and] a brave leader who sought to bridge the gaps and unite the people.”
Lieberman was the Democratic vice presidential candidate who ran alongside former Vice President Al Gore in the 2000 presidential election. The pair were defeated by former President George W. Bush and former Vice President Dick Cheney.
In his later years, Lieberman co-chaired and directed the No Labels organization committee to vet potential candidates for unity tickets. Over the past year, a significant portion of the group’s management and key staff have left. Lieberman was, in fact, the group’s chief spokesman thanks to its third-party advocacy efforts last year.
