A lucky group of black bears were treated to a pedal boat ride after a lake formed of their enclosure.
After heavy rains created a mini lake of their 13-acre reserve, keepers at Woburn Safari Park decided to drift the swan on a pedal boat.
According to Tommy Babington, deputy chief of the carnivore section at the park in Bedfordshirethe bears were “immediately intrigued” by their latest neighbor and “wasted no time examining him.”
The pedal boat is often used elsewhere on the positioning, but is awaiting latest pedals, Babington said.
“Seeing them climb on the deck was great fun for guests, and we love coming up with new ways to provide food, scent and habitat enrichment that stimulate their natural foraging behavior,” he said.
“Bears are naturally very curious animals and keepers will encourage this by introducing all kinds of enrichment into their environment because it will keep their minds and bodies active.
“Enriching swan boats may be a less conventional approach to stimulating their natural behavior, but it was certainly a hit.”
The 4 black bears are two pairs of siblings – two males and two females – named Harvard, Maple, Colorado and Aspen.
They come from North America. They can grow as much as 2m long and weigh over 45 stone.
