Australian fresh produce company Costa Group recently set a brand new Guinness World Record for the heaviest blueberry in the world, with the fruit weighing 20.4 grams and being about the size of a golf ball.
The record blueberry, harvested on November 13, 2023, at Costa’s blueberry farm in Corindi, New South Wales, was from the Eterna variety, which is understood for producing consistently large fruit without sacrificing flavor. Interestingly, one of the farmers who runs the farm said that this blueberry was one of at the very least 20 similar-sized fruits spotted during the harvest. After measuring and weighing, it was found that the fruit outperformed the previous heaviest blueberry by over 4 grams. The previous world record was for a 16.20g blueberry grown in Western Australia in 2020.

“Eterna as a variety has a really great taste and consistently large fruit” – Brad Hocking from Costa Group, one of the breeders, he said. “When we picked this one, there were probably about 20 other berries of a similar size. “It’s a really wonderful fruit. Although the fruit is large, there is absolutely no compromise in quality or flavor that you would expect when developing a premium blueberry.”
“We are always looking to develop new varieties that will improve the current benchmark and meet changing customer requirements,” said George Jessett, horticulture manager for Costa Berries International, adding that the company develops on average one to 2 latest blueberry varieties with world business value annually.

Eterna was already known for its large fruit, crunchy texture and long shelf life, but this latest world record cemented its repute as a berry Goliath.
