Former Republican White House staffer Joel Kaplan has just been named head of global policy for Meta Platforms Inc., after former British deputy prime minister Nick Clegg leaves the corporate after six years.
Clegg (pictured, centre), who led the Liberal Democratic Party from 2007 to 2015, joined Meta – then Facebook Inc. – in 2018 as vp of global affairs and communications, and in 2022 he became president of global affairs. His first nomination got here during a torrid period for Metawhich handled the results of the Cambridge Analytica scandal. He then played a serious role in establishing the corporate’s Board of Directors, helping to ease the burden on Meta during an era of torrents of bad press.
“My time at the company coincided with a significant reset in the relationship between ‘big tech’ and social pressures manifested in new regulations, institutions and norms affecting the sector,” Clegg wrote on Facebook. post. “I hope I have played some role in trying to connect the very different worlds of technology and politics – worlds that will continue to interact in unpredictable ways around the world.”
He said it was “the right time” to depart and that he would now “hand over the reins” to Kaplan, who “is definitely the right person in the right job at the right time.” Kaplan was White House deputy chief of staff in the course of the George W. Bush administration. He joined Meta in 2011 and has since grow to be known as a defender of the corporate’s conservative voices, promoting the interests of conservative media at a time when the corporate has been accused of bias against such voices.
With the rise of Donald Trump as US President, it is no wonder that this latest nomination was made. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg hasn’t all the time had a great relationship with Trump, becoming one of the social media firms to attract his ire with a ban following the Jan. 6 chaos on the Capitol. However, there have been many signs recently that Zuckerberg and Trump have grow to be friends. Two I met recently at Mar-a-Lago, $1 million each donation to Donald Trump’s inaugural fund.
“You have made an important impact in promoting Meta’s voice and values around the world, and in advancing our vision for artificial intelligence and the metaworld,” Zuckerberg said in response to Clegg’s post. “I am excited that Joel will next take on this role, given his deep experience and expertise that has guided our policy work for many years.”
