The crippling service outage affected several Meta apps, and hundreds of individuals across the US reported problems accessing their Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp accounts.
According to DownDetector website monitoringthe outage appears to have began around 12:36 a.m. EST, with Facebook being hit first before the outage spread to other platforms. Facebook appears to have been hit the toughest because the variety of service outage reports peaked at 107,005 around 1 p.m. ET.

Instagram saw its peak of 68,108 reports on DownDetector, while WhatsApp fared higher with 9,301 reports. The problem also affected threads, although the break was not that severe – only 789 reports were recorded. Remember this is only one source. It’s possible that many more people were unable to log in.
Meta is well aware of those problems and is working on an answer. The tech giant does published X’s statement claiming that he’s attempting to “get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and [it apologizes] for any inconvenience.” If you go to Meta status pageyou will find that the majority of the corporate’s services are experiencing “major disruptions” on the time of writing. It will not be known yet what is causing the disruption.

Services seem like slowly returning. Instagram was previously unavailable and nothing was refreshing. However, the feed on my personal account managed to update and I used to be able to save lots of posts, although Story posts remain invisible.
The service may return soon, but the precise time is unknown. We will update you with further information because it becomes available.
Update (December 11, 2024, 6:05 p.m. EST): The outage lasted until late. However, more information has come to light, including a possible cause. Network intelligence company Cisco ThounsandEyes published an announcement regarding X claiming to have detected “internal server errors and timeouts” on Meta’s servers, declaring “issues with [the company’s” backend services.” The frontend web servers have been unaffected. It remains to be seen if these errors were the result of a cyberattack or some sort of backend failure.
Indicators on Meta’s status website still show that most of the tech giant’s platforms are suffering from “major disruptions.” However, reports on Down Detector have sharply dropped since the initial peak in the early afternoon, which could suggest that services are slowly coming back.
