Gabrielle’s passion for storytelling is obvious in each of her photos as she skillfully captures the essence of her characters with grace and authenticity.
To get to know Gabriela Morse – filmmaker and photographer from Atlanta, Georgia. Gabrielle graduated from Spelman College with a level in documentary filmmaking and has been involved in photography for eight years.
When asked how she began taking on photography, she said: “When I was thirteen, my parents let me use an old Nikon film camera. In 2010, Tumblr had a big influence on me, so I focused on taking photos of things that I found aesthetically pleasing. When I finally received my first DSLR camera as a Christmas gift, I immediately started taking portraits of my friends, asking them to pose for various photo shoots.”
Gabrielle describes her photography style as primarily editorial, but has recently grow to be increasingly enthusiastic about archival photography. In each genres, he likes to experiment with different colours and compositions. Her equipment features a Canon EOS R7 as her major camera and a Minolta Film Camera, which she recently likes to make use of to take more spontaneous photos.
She said she likes to take photos in spaces that have already got loads of leading lines. “Sometimes this includes natural surroundings such as fallen trees or grassy areas. Other times I am drawn to industrial areas, places that seem almost abandoned. I like quiet places because they allow me to focus on the subject and its surroundings.”
We asked Gabrielle to share her latest photo shared with the Black Women Photographers group and tell us about it. After sharing the photo above, she said: “I chose this photo from a series I created called , because I like the look on the model’s face. Although her facial features are mostly lost in the movement and shadows of the scarf wrapped around her, they are still accentuated by the wrinkles of the accessory.”
When asked about taking and editing the photo, she replied: “To take the photo, two people on either side of the model shook the scarf while she was underneath it. In this way I hoped to achieve a sense of fluidity and movement, almost as if she were in the water. The title of the photo comes from one of my favorite childhood horror movies, “Deep and Dark and Dangerous.” I used Lightroom to further darken the mood of the photo, creating something that I felt was mysterious and perhaps emotional to match the model’s expression.”
In addition to photography, Gabrielle is obsessed with filmmaking and the stories behind them. “I have always been fascinated by the process and no matter how boring it may be, I am always delighted with what I do.”
