The 800 block of Decatur Street might be temporarily closed until all mitigation work is accomplished and secure for pedestrians and vehicular traffic
NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Fire Department responded Sunday to 2 separate partial constructing collapses in the French Quarter and the Seventh Ward.
NOFD responded to the scene after a partial balcony collapse of a constructing in the French Quarter at 823 Decatur St. around 12:11
WWL Louisiana responded to the scene and found a balcony resulting in the vacant former Tujaque’s Restaurant constructing on the corner of Decatur and Madison Street.
A witness, Abraham Timontel, who works at a business across the road from the constructing, told WWL he saw the balcony sway for about two hours before strong winds blew and the balcony collapsed onto the road below.
Construction contractors on the scene told firefighters that a “contractor-used garbage chute separate from the building” caused the second-story balcony and a railing attached to it to fall onto the road and sidewalk, the discharge said.
At the time of the collapse, the balcony was under renovation.
The fire department was then called to 2019 Frenchmen St at roughly 1:12 p.m., where a single-story, wood-frame constructing had partially collapsed. NOFD said the report alerted crews that folks were possibly trapped in the house.
They said the constructing was damaged and the fitting side of the outside wall separated from the constructing and fell onto “an occupied double room at 2011-13 Frenchman St.”
Neighbors said three adults and one dog lived in the house, but “the house had been in disrepair since Hurricane Katrina,” in accordance with NOFD.
Only the dog was in the house on the time of the collapse, it was rescued and is secure.
The Department of Code Enforcement was called to the scene to find out further remedial measures.
No injuries were reported in either incident.
The 800 block of Decatur Street might be temporarily closed until all mitigation work is accomplished and secure for pedestrians and vehicular traffic.
