NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — A brand new pride center will open in Tremé, and members of the local and visiting LGBTQ2IA+ community are invited to have a good time its grand opening in true New Orleans style.
On Saturday, April 6, the New Orleans Pride Center will open its latest location at 600 North Broad Avenue on Broadside.
Board member Noel Twilbeck says the town is a renowned place where the community can have a good time its authenticity through year-round events. Twilbeck says the middle’s opening will signal to tourists that New Orleans has festivities that everybody can take part in, in addition to support for individuals who come.
“New Orleans needs and deserves a robust community center that serves and supports the LBGTQ2IA+ community. “Proposed and enacted legislation that restricts or prohibits life-saving health care for transgender people, coupled with increases in physical threats, make it more important than ever to have a safe space,” Twilbeck said. “The physical and mental safety of all members of the LGBTQ2IA+ community are at risk.”
Pride Center operators say it’s going to be a secure space and hub for connections and resources, providing LGBTQ+ members of all ages with access to community groups, educational workshops and other services.
“I wish the Pride Center had been open a few years ago when my son came out as transgender. We have struggled to find support and resources for him and our family who adore him. One of my goals as a board member of the New Orleans Pride Center is to provide visibility, resources and support to both the individuals and families who are part of this loving community,” said local mom and LASPCA CEO Ana Zorrilla.
The event will begin at 2 p.m. and can feature music by Mia Boarders and drag queen performances through April and May.
Food trucks might be on site.
Center operators say Storyville Stompers will run the standard second line to the brand new Pride Center at 2762 Orleans Ave.
