The two best legislators from Louisiana asked the Regent Council to examine the possibilities of the University of Nowy Orlean’s financial transfer to the LSU.
Uno, the only public research institution in Nowy Orlean, was transferred from the LSU to the University of Louisiana system in 2011. The campus was founded as Louisiana State University in Nowy Orlean, with classes starting in 1958.
Phillip Devillier, R-Eunice and President of the Senate Cameron Henry, R-metairie, jointly signed a letter to the chairman of Regents Misti Cordell, asking the State Council of Educational Supervision to present their findings about possibilities. State law gives regents a 12 months to conduct a study.
In an interview, Devillier said that the study is conducted to check whether the transfer of the university to one other system can assist his budget and recruit problems. Henry has not yet answered at the request for comment.
The president of the University of Louisiana, Rick Galot, reached the phone on Friday afternoon, said that he was not consulted before the legislators sent the application. Uno was moved to the system street 14 years ago. Galot said that his system would offer all information needed for the Regent report.
“I certainly respect the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the Chamber to do what they think is appropriate,” said Galot
LSU spokesman Todd Woodward and LSU Supervisors Council chairman Scott Ballard has not yet responded to requests for a comment to this report.
The proposal appears as Uno experiences a pointy budget crisis. The school is in the face of a budget deficiency of $ 10 million and has implemented the freezing of expenses, exemptions And the staff trying to meet. University officials have opened the possibility of further layoffs and Furloughs. The UNO budget crisis is essentially related to registration. The school enrolled in about 17,000 before Katrina, with an instantaneous decline to about 6,000. In the autumn of 2024, his total student body was 6,488.
At the time of the system switch in 2011, UNO graduates and amplifiers applauded the plan dim in the LSU system.
The UNO transition to the UL system occurred after the legislators didn’t adopt the regulations to connect the school with Southern University Nowy Orlean, a historically Black University. The fears of re -proposing the same proposal were repeated again amongst the modern UNO crisis, although no official plan or regulations were presented.
