NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – There will be a dramatic change in weather across the region, starting with storms on Sunday and reaching freezing temperatures early next week.
Sunday will start with light rain and even a thunderstorm as warm, moist air moves into the realm. Temperatures will climb to the low 70s in the course of the day, with gusty south winds reaching as much as 30 mph.
By Sunday night, a robust cold front will bring widespread rainfall and thunderstorms, a couple of of which could produce damaging winds and even an isolated tornado. The heaviest weather conditions are prone to occur within the evening, weakening as we move east.
After the front passes, the temperature will begin to drop. Monday morning, overnight lows will fall into the upper 30s, and gusty northwest winds will make it feel even cooler.
Highs on Monday will struggle to achieve the upper 40s, and Monday evening lows could drop into the 20s in northern areas. Cold weather reports and frost warnings are expected, especially for areas beyond the immediate coastline.
Tuesday and Wednesday will remain chilly, with daytime highs only hitting 40 degrees and overnight lows hovering around freezing. Gradual warming is expected towards the tip of the week, but the danger of rainfall will return as one other weather system approaches.
Residents should prepare for possible severe weather on Sunday and take precautions against freezing temperatures early next week, especially protecting plants, pets and pipes from the cold.
