New Jersey’s quirky status is hard-earned, but one oddity stands out: it is the only place in America where you possibly can’t pump your own gas.
Laws prohibiting self-service gasoline were common: within the late Sixties almost half of US states she had one. The net economic impact of lifting the ban stays unclear. Scientists will get a greater feel for this by watching what’s happening in Oregon, although there may be movement to place the problem on the November 2024 ballot and let Oregon voters resolve to reinstate the ban. If successful, it’s going to be an election that might be closely watched by New Jersey politicians and self-care gurus.
