Among the ideas from various platforms and experts, one consistent piece of recommendation is to avoid clicking on random links present in unsolicited text messages, messaging apps or emails.
With the arrival of Christmas, the concept of holiday shopping has modified online, adapting to the continued digital transformation of today’s generation.
There are many web sites where you may buy Christmas gifts. However, this convenience has also develop into a chance for online fraudsters to exploit it.
They create fake web sites designed to steal personal information from unsuspecting victims.
Gogolook Philippines country head Mel Migriño commented on a report by the Global Anti-Scam Alliance (GASA) detailing scams that Filipinos often face.
“The study showed that more than 30% of respondents in the Philippines encounter scams related to shopping websites,” Ms. Migriño said.
“Then comes investment fraud, advance payment fraud and identity theft,” she added.
Ms. Migriño thus highlighted the Web Checker feature of Whoscall, a global anti-fraud application, as a useful tool for most people.
“Users can use the automatic network check feature to check whether a URL or domain is suspicious or not, and also secure their internet connection,” Ms. Migriño explained.
Artificial intelligence for profiling victims
Moreover, online fraudsters are increasingly using artificial intelligence (AI) to more effectively profile victims.
“With AI, fraudsters can quickly analyze and profile their targets, which helps them decide what type of social engineering tactics to use,” Ms. Migriño said.
“I urge everyone to at all times protect their data, respect their right to privacy and thoroughly select the extent of data they share online. For fraudsters, our personal data is the last word prize,” she added, emphasizing the importance of privacy protection.
