BUCHAREST (Reuters) – Robert F. Kennedy Jr., President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to go the U.S. Health Department, will travel to Romania next week to meet with Calin Georgescu, the surprise winner of the far right in the first round of the presidential election – reported by a Romanian TV station.
Georgescu got here first in Sunday’s vote and secured a spot in the second round scheduled for December 8, a victory that could upend politics in Romania and undermine its pro-Western stance.
However, the election result was questioned by the Romanian Supreme Court, which ordered a recount of all votes solid last Sunday. On Monday, the court will determine whether to invalidate the first round. Parliamentary elections will even be held in Romania on Sunday.
Kennedy will be in Bucharest next week to present his book on the coronavirus pandemic, which has a foreword written by Georgescu, private TV station Realitatea said in an announcement. Kennedy is an environmentalist who has spread misinformation about vaccines.
“Realitatea is the media partner of the year-ending meeting between Donald Trump’s future health secretary and the surprise winner of the presidential vote,” Realitatea said in an announcement. He added that the televised discussion would happen on December 5.
Kennedy’s spokesman and representatives of Republican Trump’s transition team didn’t immediately reply to a request for comment.
Earlier this week, Georgescu told Realitatea that Kennedy could come to Bucharest.
On Saturday, his communications team neither denied nor confirmed the meeting.
